Sportgastein

Adrenaline junkies searching for challenges and deep-snow adventures will discover their own corner of heaven in Salzburg’s highest glacier-free ski area (2686 m)! Whether the slopes are covered in fresh powder or compacted firn snow, nothing stands in the way of going off-piste and throwing yourself into an unforgettable freeride adventure. Aside from different variant runs, Sportgastein also features three official, clearly marked ski routes that are protected from avalanches. That said, the groomed pistes also have a lot to offer. In addition, there is never a shortage of magical mountain panoramas to marvel at either.

Skiing in Sportgastein

With perfect snow conditions – powder, deep-snow and firn – you can leave the pistes and embark on skiing adventures in freeride terrain. Furthermore, you will be able to marvel at the magical wintry mountain panoramas. We also highly recommend three different ski routes – the Golden Powder, Golden Rush and Golden Ride – an opportunity to explore the sportiest ski area in Gastein away from the piste, deep-snow included! After dropping roughly 1000 vertical meters and having all kinds of powdery fun, you will finally arrive at the valley floor in Sportgastein. All skiers are advised to pay attention to warning signs, closures and other tips intended to ensure your personal safety away from the pistes. Located close to the Goldbergbahn valley station is a big avalanche search & rescue practice area. Here, skiing guests can train their response skills in the event of a worst-case scenario. At the mountain terminal, you will find a freeride checkpoint, where, prior to setting out on your freeride expedition, you can ensure your avalanche transponder is functioning correctly one last time and doublecheck the current avalanche threat level as well as all other relevant information. In Sportgastein, there is also a transponder station as well as a Freeride Info Base.

Sportgastein is the place where sporty types feel right at home. Skiers’ dreams come true in Sportgastein, the second snow conditions allow you to leave the groomed pistes – that is to say, if there’s fresh powder on the ground, and especially in firn conditions.
Our special tip: Ski routes 1 + 2 + 3: deep-snow as far as the eye can see. After one thousand vertical meters of magical deep-snow and moguls pistes, glide out onto the valley floor of Sportgastein. Please pay close attention to the warning signs and closures!
